Today I am in a mood to treat myself with something sweet and yummy. Of course I
don’t want to compromise on the Saatvik qualities.

I love milkshakes ..so here I made this almond date milkshake.

Ingredients

1. Deseeded Dates – 4 – 5

2. Almonds – 8 – 10 (blanched and peeled is definitely better, I took it fresh out of the fridge and used it, as it is with the peel)

3. Whole cow milk – 1 glass

Preparation Time – 5 mins

Preparation Method

Put all ingredients in a mixer or a smoothie maker. Blend together. May take a few mins of blending and crushing to get a proper uniform consistency.

Yummilicous milkshake ready!!

Ayurvedic understanding of the contents is as follows

1.Dates

मधुरं बृहणं वृष्यं खर्जुरं गुरु शीतल् ।
क्षयेअ्भिघाते दाहे च वातपित्ते च तद्वितम् ।। च सू २७

Dates nourish the tissues, help in growth and development, stimulate anabolic metabolism, acts as aphrodisiacs and are to be consumed when planning to start a family. They cools the body and hence reduce symptoms of heartburn, irritation and burning of the skin. Very useful in healing wounds, as it accelerates the healing process. They help in balancing the Vaata and Pitta Dosha.

2. Almonds 

गरूष्णस्निग्धमधुरा्: सोरुमाणा बलप्रदा: ।
वातघ्ना बृहणां वृष्या: कफपित्ताभिवर्धना:।। च सू २७

Almonds have a warm potency and are nourishing to the body. They reduce the dryness and Vaata in the body. They increase strength and vitality. Beneficial for growth and development of the body. However taking excess of almonds will aggravate the Kapha and Pitta Dosha.

3. Cow Milk

स्वादु शीतं मृदु स्निग्धं बहलं श्लक्ष्णपिच्छिलम् ।
गुरु मन्दं प्रसन्नं च गव्यं दशगुणं पय : ।।

Cow milk is universally liked. It gives cooling to the body and reduces Pitta Dosha. It is mild and is tolerated well by all age groups. It is unctuous and reduces Vaata, thus reducing the dryness and cell degradation caused by aggravated Vaata. It is slightly heavy to digest. On consumption it pleases the senses and creates a feeling of gratitude.

The above qualities are just a glimpse. Dates, almonds and milk are rich with a variety of health benefits. Will talk about those in later posts.
